Important information for the hunter
The total approximate number of black grouse in Belarus is 45-50 thousand individuals. The population is quite representative (in comparison with the capercaillie). Therefore, the chance of a successful hunt is much higher. It is recommended to pay attention to birch groves, because the bird likes to live in birch stands. In autumn, hunting for capercaillie in Belarus is effective in swampy small woodlands.
The average weight of males is 1.5 kg; females-slightly less. The plumage of the male black grouse is black with the inherent areas that are tinged with green and purple. Females are brown with transverse stripes with a yellowish and brown hue. The period of the current of birds, when they can be heard from afar and clearly, is mainly from March to May. This period coincides with the permitted hunting period. They lead mainly a terrestrial lifestyle. That is why they often become victims of foxes and wild boars. Only in severe frosts they climb trees. They feed on plant products (grass, buds, tops of shrubs).
